HOUSING

A Better, Brighter Home

A Brief Glimpse:

  • 3 new residences in 3 years—two from the university, one from the UTSU, achieved by locking in post-secondary regional upzoning and leveraging the $15B student housing fund we just secured

  • Build toward a universal residence guarantee by 2030

  • Hold Campus Landlords Accountable with Student Tenancy Guides and RateMyBuilding

Build a solid foundation for new residence housing

to make sure that all UofT students who want housing can access it. Affordability of housing near and on campus has become a huge problem: UofT students should always have the option open for affordable, quality housing. It is also incredibly difficult to build housing that will bring down prices for students. In order to fix this, we need to start building the foundations for new housing—and a lot of it. I plan to use the federal government’s $15 billion commitment to new affordable housing, secure guarantees for funding commitments from the University, and my connections with city councillors to ensure that the finance and zoning barriers that prevent new housing construction are eliminated. These goals will ensure that, in the long-term, residences can continue to be constructed even after my term is complete.

Create an open database called RateMyBuilding

for UofT student renters to submit reviews of rental apartments near campus. Landlords in Toronto have exploited student renters because of a lack of information; simply, the information to keep students safe and properly inform them on the landlord or building management they are dealing with is hard to find. RateMyBuilding will create a platform for students to share their experiences, creating a centralised platform that equips students with the need-to-know information on landlords and building managements that will make renting safer and less stressful.
